Humoral Medicine is a traditional, ancient medicine system originating in written form in Ancient Greece around 400 BCE in the Corpus Hippocraticum, and by Galen of Pergamom around 150 CE. Through symbols of the four spiked wheel, it might be traced back as far as European Bronze Age. Humoral Medicine is based on The Four Humors, a kind of fluids in the human body that mirror the Elements of Life: Air, Fire, Earth, Water and a Fifth Element in the Center, the Spirit, or “Pneuma”. Based on a holistic and ecological worldview, where people and land were kin, it is our ancient, maybe indigenous European Medical Heritage, honoring the whole person, the whole living beings, the whole Mother Earth. Ancient European Herbalism was based upon its ecological principles hot – cold – dry – moist.

Humoral Medicine was in practice in Europe until as late as 1850, when it was finally completely discontinued by upcoming modern medicine germ theory.
